Proper Care for Natural or Genuine Opals

When you purchase natural or genuine opals, you need to know that natural opals will dry out. To preserve the gem, you will need to treat them regularly with mineral oil.

To apply mineral oil on an opal, you simply rub the oil on it with your finger and allow the opal to drink in the needed nutrition. Be sure to treat the back of the opal to the best of your ability. Often, jewelers will leave the back open on a setting just for that reason.

One final note about preservation, you may be tempted to soak opals in the oil. However, never soak or store the gems in the mineral oil.
